Commonly Asked Medicare Insurance Questions

You don’t need to try and navigate your Medicare alone. Our agency provides advice at no cost to you. We can help you shop the Medicare market to ensure you get the coverage and pricing that fits your situation best.

What is Medicare?

Health Insurance for people 65 or older, people under 65 with certain disabilities and for people any age with End-Stage Renal Disease

How do Medicare Supplement Plans work?

Your Medicare Part A and B have deductibles, co-pays, or co-insurance. These are referred to as gaps in your Medicare benefit. A Medicare Supplement plan, also known as a Medigap policy, pays these gaps only. It is important to note that Medicare must pay the claim first, and then the Supplement/Medigap policy will pay the amount owed after this. If Medicare does not pay the claim first, the Supplement/Medigap policy cannot pay any of the claim

What is the differece between Medicare Supplement Plans and Medigap?

Medigap and Medicare Supplement Insurance are the same thing.

Medicare Advantage, however, is different as it offers an alternative to original Medicare. Speak to an agent to better understand this coverage.

When can I sign up?

Initial Enrollment Period: You can sign up when you are first eligible for Part A and/or B.  This is a 7-month period that begins 3 months before the month you turn 65, includes the month you turn 65, and ends 3 months after the month you turn 65.  Be aware that you will have a delayed effective date of coverage if you wait until the month you turn 65 or later to sign up.

General Enrollment Period: The General Enrollment Period occurs annually. If you did not sign up for your Part B when you were first eligible, you can sign up between January 1st and March 31st every year. Your benefit will begin on the first of the following month. You may have to pay a late enrollment penalty if you delayed the Part B enrollment and did not have a Special Enrollment Period. If you are wanting to sign up for a PArt A plan, then you are free to do so any time after you turn 65.

Special Enrollment Period:

If you missed your Initial Enrollment Period to enroll in your Part B benefit, you may have a Special Enrollment Period to enroll in your Part B without paying a late enrollment penalty. This includes, and not limited to:

  • Leaving your employer-provided health insurance.
  • Being impacted by a declared natural disaster or emergency

I still have health insurance through an employer or spouse. Do I need to sign up for Medicare?

If you are actively working and insured through that employment, you might not have to sign up for Part A and B.  It depends on whether your employment insurance stays as the primary payer or becomes the secondary payer once you turn 65.  Call us to discuss your specific situation here.  It might be advantageous from a cost perspective to drop your employer coverage and sign up for Medicare Part A and B and a plan that supplements it.  Our agency can show you the cost review to help make this an easy decision.
